Empty Tears

by Chloe D.

Clouds wander above the horizon
Even at dusk, the sun deferred from leaving
Keeping its last rays of hope fluttering around a disheveled grave
Littered with white roses
Remains of tears, glinted in the light like diamonds

The sound of dejection hung low in the air,
So thick it was suffocating
Searching magpies stopped to listen
Drawn to the melody of his tears

A man overwhelmed by pain and grief lay aside the bed of death
Hoping that this was all a nightmare
Hoping to wake up
Hoping to have her back beside him
Plaintively holding an invisible force, squeezing tight as if to never let go

Heart shattered into pieces as easily as glass,
Never able to mend
No one there to sew it back together
An empty hole in the middle of his chest and one in hers,
Both parts of each other
